Rights of Medication Administration
By now most of you are familiar with the first six rights of medication administration: Patient, Medication, Dosage, Route, Time, & Documentation. Did you know that there are more rights? A nurse also needs to perform the right Assessment prior to administration, offer the right Education regarding the medication(s) given, honor the client's right to Refuse medications, and perform the right Evaluation after administering the medications (10 Rights, 2007). Can you think of additional "rights" that could be included?

Concept Maps for Learning
Another learning tool that some find helpful is a concept map. A concept map is a diagram that shows relationships among concepts. Concept maps can be very simple such as the example I have posted here or they can be very complex. When learning pharmacology you can start with a particular medication or a medication class, antiemetics for example. From that one word you will draw lines to connect to the various things you have learned or want to remember about antiemetics. I have included a link to get you started with concept mapping. Learning the Meds.
With more and more medications and medication classes being put on the market, students have difficulty keeping up with it all. One of the best ways to learn the medications, side effects and precautions is to group the medications in their class. For example: group all beta blockers on one page so that learning the common information of all beta blockers becomes easier. Information particular to a medicaiton can be listed next to the med on the same page. I am including a link to a medication card such as I describe. It is a PDF form that you can type in and print out. Hope this helps.

Dosage Calculation cont.
Hello class,
I see that there are some of you are having difficulty with dosage calculations. I have made a brief presentation that I would like to share with you this week. I am also including a short video that you might find helpful. The video uses a similar technique for calculations with the difference being that instead of two fractions there is only one in the video. Please remember that I have on campus classroom hours every Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 AM in room H304 if you need face to face assistance or you may contact me for an appointment (see first blog post).
